What happend before the 16th and 17th amendment was passed?
VMariaS [17]

16th Amendment:

The 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution establishes that Congress shall have power to collect taxes on income, without apportionment among the states and without regard to any census or enumeration.

Before the 16th amendment was passed, The United States had to rely on tariffs in order to raise revenue. This reliance would have made it impossible for the country to implement a free trade system. As it was ratified in February 3rd, 1913, it also made it much easier to fund WWI.

17th Amendment:

The 17th Amendment of the United States Constitution established that the Senate shall be composed of two Senators from each state, elected for six years by the people of that state. Each senator shall have one vote, and the electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

The amendment was an object of discussion since the early 19th century, however, it was not adopted until the 20th century, when it became obvious that the question of Senate elections had become problematic. The 17th Amendment ensured that the balance of power established by the constitution was protected. It also balanced states government's rights.

Total War
valkas [14]
Three ways WW1 went from being a localized European conflict to a global one:

The declaration of war by Britain in 1914 brought the Commonwealth into the war involving far-away countries like Canada and Australia and India.

One method used by the Germans to defeat Britain was sea blockade; by the German High Seas Fleet at the beginning of the war then with submarines later... this was counters by the British Home Fleet based at Scapa Flow. By trying to cut off goods being sent to Britain the war was fought at sea also in the Channel and in the Atlantic.

Neutral countries like the USA joining later in the war in 1917 make WW1 an even bigger global conflict.

A forth way is how the British, French and Germans all had colonies in Africa - and fought each other there also.

Hope that helps :)

2. Describe the belief in purgatory and explain the reason for the sale of indulgences.
Nadusha1986 [10]

During the time of the selling of indulgences, purgatory was (and still is, I believe) believed to be the midpoint between heaven and hell. God would send you there and you would have to spend time their for your sins you committed on Earth. The Catholic Church sold indulgences as a way of getting quick money. They told the people that buying indulgences would get you out of time in purgatory. The real reason the church sold indulgences was to get money to patronize art.
