Why did portugal build trade forts on the west african coast, rather than go into the interior to trade?

History

Portugal created trade forts along the coast rather than inland because their goal was to control trade routes. They were not looking to build and control a land empire. They were after the route needed to gain access to the East Indies, India, and China. All they needed to control was the coastal area.

Trade forts enabled Portugal to ensure that the supply lines remained intact, as well as to protect ships taking on supplies. In addition, forcing local suppliers to 'bring goods to market' protected Portuguese traders from potential attacks. In a similar vein, it reduced the risk to the Portuguese traders of damage to the 'merchandise' during transit to port, as the suppliers would have borne that burden up to the point of delivery at the trade fort.

What was the Aliied strategy for World War || ?
natima [27]

Answer:

D.)The U.S. would focus on the Pacific while the other Allies focused on Europe.

Explanation:

This doesn´t mean the United States was not seriously involved in the war in Europe. Combined US and Allied forces invaded Italy in 1943 to knock that country out of the war and put pressure on Germany from the south, and there was an American buildup in Britain for the big invasion that finally occurred on D-Day in June 1944. Nevertheless, the Pacific War was mainly a US effort against the Japanese, where no major European allied power was significantly engaged until 1945.

What challenges did the EU and NATO face in the Balkans?
wariber [46]

Answer:

As they fretted over where, after Ukraine, they would confront the next challenge from Vladimir Putin’s Russia, the EU and Nato may have been looking in the wrong place. The most immediate danger now lies not in the Baltic states of north-east Europe, but in the south-east, in the Balkans.

Ever since the 1990s post-Yugoslav wars, two main factors have helped stabilise the western Balkans — the five ex-Yugoslav states that have not yet joined the EU, plus Albania. One was the prospect, however distant, of joining the EU. This has encouraged democratising reforms. The hope has been that EU membership would ultimately cement reconciliation between the peoples of the Balkans, as it did between France and Germany and other second world war foes.

The other stabilising force was US support, and the assumption that the US or Nato would intervene if conflict were to re-emerge — as they did in Bosnia in 1995 and Kosovo in 1999.
