Explanation:

It is well known that even when abolition of slavery was taking place in many places in the world, between the 18th and 19th centuries, in the United States this institution retained its grip hard. Before the Civil War, slavery was a very profitable business and it was well-rooted, especially in the South. When the Civil War ended, and even though the institution of slavery was abolished, most Southern states fought to retain it. This resistance on the part of the South to let go completely of slavery, and their desire to push it towards the new territories of the country, maintained an atmosphere of division between the North and South, for several years after the Civil War.
