Texas was admitted into the United States in 1845, making it the 28th state to join the Union. This came after Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836. The territory became the Republic of Texas, and it elected Sam Houston as its first president. However, Texas eventually joined the United States as a slave state after obtaining approval from Congress.
