Rice arrived to America with European and African migrants. Overtime, it became one of the most important crops in the colony of Georgia.

However, cultivating rice is extremely demanding. Moreover, mosquitoes are common in the swampy environment that "wet" rice requires, which leads to the spread of diseases. This meant that white planters used slave labour almost exclusively. This led to an increase in the number of enslaved workers in the colony.
