1. The American flag: symbolism

Symbolism refers to objects, traits, colors, animals, etc (anything with a physical existence) that stand for one meaning or several that are different from the actual meaning of the form of that physical "thing" or living being. For many, the American flag acts as a symbol of liberty and patriotism.

2. It was spring in the year 1930 and few of us had much hope left: setting

Setting refers to the time and place in which the story takes place. This sentence is an example of setting because it sets the time period: spring in the year 1930.

3. Boy meets girl; they fall in love; and get married: plot

The plot is the main events of a play, novel or film, that are related to each other in a sequence, such as in the given segment.

4. Boy meets girl; but does not get along with girl's parents: conflict

In literature, conflict is a clash, disagreement or struggle between two opposing groups or individuals, that often keeps the reader interested in the story.

5. All that glitters is not gold: theme

This sentence is an example of a theme because it can be considered as a message, piece of advice or life/universal lesson that we could implicitly find in a story.

6. Slim had thin lips like a lizard's and when he smiled, a gold tooth flashed suddenly in the light: characterization

Characterization is a literary device used for the construction of a fictional character. By describing Slim, and adding details to him, characterization is taking place.

Over the river and through the woods rhyme scheme by lydia maria child
Nana76 [90]

Answer:

The rhyme scheme in "Over the river and through the woods" is:

ABCB ABDB ACEC ACFC AGBG AHIH

Explanation:

<u>To determine the rhyme scheme of a poem, we must attribute a letter to each different final sound that appears in the last word of each line. We should always attribute the letter A to the first final sound. Every different sound that follows then should be attributed the next letter of the alphabet.</u> Thus:

Over the river and through the woods,  A

To grandfather's* house we go;  B

The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh,  C

Thru the white and drifted snow, oh!  B

Over the river and thru the woods,  A

Oh, how the wind does blow!  B

It stings the toes and bites the nose,  D

As over the ground we go.  B

Over the river and thru the wood,  A

To have a first-rate play;  C

Oh, hear the bell ring, "Ting-a-ling-ling!"  E

Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day-ay!  C

Over the river and thru the woods, A

Trot fast my dapple gray!  C

Spring over the ground like a hunting hound,  F

For this is Thanksgiving Day!  C

Over the river and through the woods,  A

And straight through the barnyard gate.  G

We seem to go extremely slow,  B

It is so hard to wait!  G

Over the river and through the woods,  A

Now Grandmother's cap I spy!  H

Hurrah for fun! Is the pudding done?  I

Hurrah for the pumpkin pie! H

Note: If we take a good look at the third stanza, we will notice the the final word of the first line is "wood" and not "woods", which actually makes it different from the first lines in the other stanzas. If we were to consider it different, then it should be labeled E, not A. It may have been intentional, it may have been an accident. I decided to label it an A, since the first lines are supposed to be the same. If we change it for an E, then we must change E to F, F to G, and so on.

Montano1993 [528]
Given the risks associated with escaping slavery, having 100,000 people escape is an incredible number and speaks to the bravery and desperation of those being held as slaves.
