9. Southern--Lincoln was a free-soiler who believed slavery should not extend any further. Southerners saw Lincoln as a threat and did not want him taking office. 

10. Voluntary--the Southern states believed they were in an agreement with the other states when agreeing to the Constitution. Being they believed in states' rights, they believed they could leave the Union if the laws were no longer in their favor.

9. Lincoln won the Presidency with less than 40% of the popular vote by carrying only northern states. Lincoln didn´t carry any slave state, and he was not even on the ballot in 10 of the southern states.

10. In opposition to the triumph of Abraham Lincoln´s anti-slavery campaign, South Carolina seceded from the Union and six other states would do the same in the following months.

The seceded based on the belief that all states had the right to leave a union they voluntarily entered.
