When the first two political parties developed, the issue that divided them most clearly was how "large" the federal government should be, with the Federalists wanting a strong federal government over the states, and the Anti-Federalists wanting a relatively "weak" federal government.
Bleeding Kansas was in the time of 1854-1859 when it was decided if Kansas was going to be free or slave-owned and there was a lot of violence occurring.
Sectionalism affected the economis and politics of the U.S by creating a difference in the geography. The south used the slaves to elevate their plantation empire, the north used machines to manufacture clothing deviating from slavery and the west used ranches for livestock.
