One activity would be logging of trees, which could be selective or clear cut. It is done to provide wood for building houses and for pulp for paper primarily. A short term effect would be loss of habitat for forest wildlife and removal of vegetation and it could result in increased erosion if in a mountainous area. Loss of old growth forest possible too. Long term effect if re-forested could be partial restoration of habitat. Another activity is open pit mining whereby the land where the orebody is is cleared and mining creates sometimes large holes in the ground and removes old lake habitats for migratory birds and fish in the short term. The purpose of the mining is partly to provide metals to society.  The long term, if adequate reclamation of waste dumps is undertaken, can lead to extensive new grasslands on the dumps and forage for deer and moose and sometimes cattle. Oil production and transport on oceans can lead to oil spills such as occurred off Valdez in the 1980's or in the Gulf of Mexico recently  and the short term is soaking marine animals with oil and killing many of them and contaminating beaches and shorelines. Some clean-up can be done but the long term effects of this activity may still be unknown. The oil is for fossil fuel for internal combustion engines but it will need to be replaced by say, electric cars for the future ie to clean energy. Another general effect of this time, the use of fossil fuels is from global warming is creating more and more intense hurricanes such as occurred in the Caribbean this fall in Cuba, Florida, Dominca and Puerto Rico in particular with the result of widespread damage or destruction of people's houses, flooding, loss of power and costly repairs  and loss of life. Only by limiting the production of greehouse gases by mankind will there be a chance to reduce the incidence and intensity of such events.

Pick the correct match.

Animal cells have plasma membrane while plant cells have cell wall and cell membrane. A plant cell has 1 large vacuole while an animal cell has more than 1 vacuole which is smaller compared to the vacuoles of a plant cell. The vacuole of a plant cell is hypertonic because it takes up to 90% of the cells volume. A plant cell has chlorophyll or chloroplasts (which gives colors to plants), animal cells does not have chloroplasts. Cell division is also called mitosis (this term is used for both animal and plant cells, no difference on that). For plant cells, centrifugal division occurs, its starts in the middle going outwards creating the cell plate. For animal cells, division is centripetal that it comes from the outside going toward the center and that is called the cleavage furrow.

Meselson and Stahl used density labeling of DNA to show that DNA replication occurs via a semiconservative mechanism. In their e
cricket20 [7]

Answer:

  • The organism previously used 15N for replication so all the DNA molecules were of 15N15N type. Then the organism is shifted to a medium where only 14N is available for replication.
  • According to semi conservative mode of replication, a newly synthesised DNA molecule consists of one new strand and one parental strand. So after the first round of replication, All the 15N strands will synthesise new DNA strands using 14N resulting into intermediate 15N14N DNA molecules. Hence, only one band would be observed (15N14N) above the original 15N15N band since 15N14N has lighter isotope too so it will be lighter than 15N15N molecules and will lie above it.
  • After second round of replication, 15N strand from 15N14N would synthesise another 14N strand. 14N strand from 15N14N molecules will also synthesise another 14N strand. So now, 50% of the DNA molecules will be of 15N14N intermediate type and 50% of them will be of 14N14N type. Two bands will be observed above the original 15N15N band. One band of 15N14N molecules will be right above it and other band of 14N14N molecules will be even higher because it is the lightest band since it has only the lighter isotope of nitrogen.
