We must remember that in that time Americans considered themselves as British American rather than separate nation, which great example of that notion is first U.S flag (with Union Jack instead of stars) so the matter here was not matter of American-British relation because they were seen as brethren and it is even stated in declaration of independence the main factor here was tension between colonists and parliament and king, colonists seen themselves as second category citizens mistreated by UK and that affected the development of underlying principles.<span />
