Haiku

A haiku is a short, three line poem with the first line with 5 syllables, the second with 7, the last with 5. It has not rhyme scheme and it usually is about nature. It can also have a kigo (a seasonal reference).
The kigo is this poem is the word snowy - it refers to winter. Also it is important to note that while the English version of the poem does not have the correct syllables, the poem was not originally written in English. It was written in Japanese. Sometimes the syllables get lost in translation.

For each of the characters, complete the steal chart to determine what you know about each character.
mojhsa [17]

Direct characterization occurs when the author expressly tells the reader about the character's characteristics. Indirect characterization occurs when the author conveys the character's characteristics in other ways.

Speech, thoughts, effect, action, and looks (STEAL) are the five basic modalities of indirect characterization.

What is the STEAL Analysis of the characters indicated below?

The S.T.E.A.L analysis for Odysseus is as follows:

 1. Speech: In Lines 34-40 Odysseus makes a speech to announce his intention to revenge.
 2. Thoughts: His thoughts here are to avenge the suitors for squandering his wealth
 3. Effect: This action inflicts fear on others
 4. Actions: Odysseus actually takes the suitors by surprise and kills them
 5. Looks: Homer portrayed Odysseus as a person with uncommon wisdom, eloquence, courage, and endurance. The above action also depicts him as vengeful.

 2. Thoughts: The above depicts Cyclops as inhospitable
 3. Effects: The actions of Cyclops make him a fearsome being
 4. Actions: Odysseus and his men are trapped in a cave behind a massive rock by the cyclops Polyphemus. Odysseus cannot escape because only the cyclops is strong enough to move the rock.
 5. Looks: Cyclops is a one eyes being known for eating men

STEAL for Calypso:

 1. Speech: In one of her speeches to Calypso, she tells Odysseus that her heart is not made of iron.
 2. Effect: This creates an impression that she loves Odysseus
 3. Actions: She actually releases Odysseus from captivity hoping that he will stay with her.
 4. Effects: Calypso's interaction with Odysseus reveals aspects of Calypso and Odysseus. Odysseus is sorry for betraying his wife while Calypso is seen as kind-hearted towards Odysseus.

Answer:

The position states a point of view that disagrees with Aristotle's.

Explanation:

The position, or claim, is a statement that contains how the writers feels on the topic, not an introduction to the topic itself, so the first answer is incorrect and can be eliminated.

The introduction begins with presenting Aristotle's point of view on having many friends; however, this isn't the writer's view, as they claim that Aristotle's point isn't valid in sentence 3. Since there is a position present and it disagrees with Aristotle's, the second and fifth answers are incorrect and the third answer, being the opposite of the second, is correct.

The writer simply asserts that it is possible to have a large number of true friends, but doesn't present any reasons why this is true (extroverts are better at making friends, one simply needs to put a little more work into their friendships, etc.). Therefore, the fourth answer is incorrect.
