The African-American soldiers were equally committed as white soldiers when it came to serving the nation but their pay was much less. African-American soldiers used to get 10$ per month and clothing deduction of 3$ was also there whereas other soldiers used to get 12$ per month along with additional allowance for clothing of 3.5$ per month. Discrimination in pay was no only the sole issue, Another problem that African-American soldiers had to face was the work their units used to assign them. African-American soldiers were mostly given works related to labour and they got very little opportunities to be on the front line of combat operations. Union Military of United States composed of around 10% of African-American soldiers. Out of 40,000 soldiers who lost their lives in civil war movement, 30,000 of them died because of diseases. In addition to that, Black soldiers also faced Racial prejudice. In year 1864, Congress granted rights for equal pay and because of this very step, The African-American troops started to get equal pay was other soldiers along with additional allowance for clothing. They also started to receive medical care from the government to which they were denied earlier.
