1. Fake news is news that is not supported factually and may never have happened in the first place. Much like a rumor.
2. It can be damaging because it can ruin a person's reputation. Maybe even causing them to not be able to get a good job or go into a good college.
3. You can protect yourself from fake news, by not giving out personal information about you and stuff.
