After Japan opened to the West in 1858, the large amount of Western translated literature to which the Japanese began to have access represented a big influence on how fiction began to evolve. Novels began to be written in first person, and later gave place to themes such as naturalism an the working class. Several works such as <em>"The Essence of the Novel"  </em>by Tsubouchi Shoyo in 1885, which focused on the use colloquial language, and <em>"The Drifting Cloud"</em> by Futabatei Shimei, which was actually written in colloquial languaje, marked a whole new trend in Japanese literature.
