The answer is to fill different niches.

Adaptive radiation is the process of development of new forms of organisms from an ancestral species. When an environment changes or some new niches open, speciation from the ancestral species occurs. New species have morphological and physiological adaptations which allow them to exploit a whole range of divergent environment.

The cell membrane is primarily composed of a mix of proteins and phospholipids

Phospholipids are a major component of cell membranes.  They a head and a tail. The head is hydrophilic  (attracted to water) and the tail is hydrophobic (repelled by water).

They form a bilayer in which their hydrophilic heads face the aqueous cytosol and extracellular fluid  while their hydrophobic tails face away from the cytosol  and extracellular fluid.

The lipid bilayer is semi - permeable

1) Moving Water - Water, when running for a long period of time, can actually start to weather rocks.

2) <span>Ice wedging - Yep, this can cause rocks to weather as well. Water, when being constantly frozen and unfrozen weathers the rock due to the fact that water is able to expand.

3) Plant Roots - Ah, these little nutrient grabbers can certainly weather rocks over periods of time.

4) Winds - Winds can certainly physically weather the rocks, and it's probably the most common way they do.
