17-19th century is a period of Enlightenment that dominated the world of ideas in Europe. Many people who were involved in American Resolution related themselves closely with the Enlightenment.

Benjamin Franklin visited Europe often and actively participated in the scientific and political debates, and took newest ideas to Philadelphia. Many Enlightenment philosophers used reason to reveal natural laws. Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Locke proposed that the government should be based on the harmony of the governed.
