During World War I, the federal government put forth several different laws/campaigns to increase patriotism. This include food rationing campaigns, encouraging women to join the work force, etc. However, one element that was considered unpatriotic was criticizing the government.

To prevent this from happening, a set of laws was passed. These laws were called the Espionage and Sedition Acts. These federal laws outlined harsh punishments for individuals who criticized the government during this era.
