On a long summer afternoon a Trailways bus becomes a metal box on thick, determined double tires that leaves a wake of blue smok

e, tedium,1 abandoned hopes, and intentions half-formed. The wake drifts beyond the asphalt to be inhaled by white-haired black men on wooden porches, by teenage girls with bare legs and braces on their teeth. It leaves a dull film on billboards. Inside the bus, in his summer Class-A uniform with its brass glitter and infantry-blue shoulder cordon,2 Jamie Sabin was going home. Fort Benning would be a fading dream; Preston, Virginia, a place unknown, his future. He was in between, fumbling with puzzle pieces, making up stories about the real Jamie Sabin. Each of these he set adrift like a paper boat on a shifting sea of daydreams. He did that encased in the drone and shudder of diesel pistons and hissing tires. Jamie Sabin was going home to a place unknown. Three seats back, across the aisle, a young woman who had boarded the bus in Charlotte sat with pained furrows between her brows. Her dark eyes counted the rhythm of passing utility poles without registering a sum. Her mind rolled and pitched with passing images of weatherwracked barns, mobile homes, a brown dog with its tongue draped out to dispel the summer heat. Kathryn Shay was half asleep, but wide awake. She sat forward in her seat, slumped in it, then sat up again, her long olive fingers pressing nervously against the tote bag on her lap. Kathryn Shay was running away from a home too well known. —R. He’s a dreamer looking forward to a great new life. c. He’s uncertain about his future in Preston, Virginia. d. He’s a soldier who has just enlisted in the military. What connects the wake of the bus to abandoned hopes? a. Blue smoke b. Asphalt c. Dust d. Diesel pistons Which phrase best shows that Kathryn is tense and possibly unhappy? a. “pained furrows between her brows” b. “counted the rhythm of passing utility poles” c. “half asleep, but wide awake” d. “long olive fingers pressed nervously against the tote bag” What is the main theme of the excerpt? a. 1. He's uncertain about his future in Preston, Virginia.

Throughout the section about Jamie Sabin, the narrator repeats the word "unknown". This indicates that he is uncertain about his future in Virginia. He may also be looking forward to his new life, but there are not many words with positive connotations that would indicate that it's going to be a "great new life".

2. a. Blue smoke

The wake of the bus leaves behind a blue smoke. It says that this smoke is full of these "abandoned hopes, and intentions half-formed".

3. "long olive fingers pressed nervously against the tote bag"

This best shows that she is tense since it describes her fingers as "pressed nervously". This pressure indicates that she is tense. The line "pained furrows between her brows" can indicate that she is anxious or worried, but might not be the best evidence to show her as tense and possibly unhappy.

4. b. The concept of home

Jamie Sabin is described as "going home to a place unknown". This description of him "going home" is used twice in the section that describes him. Kathryn Shay is described as "running away from a home too well known". These two passages both show different types of homes.

The best answer to the question: What are the "tatters and charcoal ruins of history? would be: the books and any such written texts, that had by now been prohibited and were considered useless and even hateful. These were the ruins of written history and they were left in tatters because they were always burned.

Explanation:

"Farenheit 451" is the novel that was written by Ray Bradbury and which was published in 1953. The story narrates the life of Guy Montag, a firefighter who has to perform his duty, like everyone else, of exterminating literature and all other kinds of writting, that are present in books. In order to do this, Montag, and his colleagues go to different places where books might be present, and instead of putting out fires, fire them to burn books. In this particular excerpt, which is part of the very opening of the novel, the main character is talking about books themselves, and how they were seen as an evil thing that needed to be destroyed, as they were deemed useless. History, and knowledge, says the novel, was now given through other types of media.
