Hi there.

I'm just going to put the answer for now. I might come back and edit my answer if I figure out how to solve this the long way.

All I did was figure out what exponent you raise 10 to.

10³ = 1000

So, we now have 8 + 10³ = 1008

Edit:

I did it on paper - here it is broken down.

8 + 10^{x} = 1008

Subtract 8 from both sides.

10^{x} = 1000

We know that 10³ = 1000

<em>x</em> = 3

Eighteen boys joined a group of p students in the auditorium. If the ratio of boys to girls was then 5:4 write and algebraic exp
ycow [4]

Answer:  The number of girls in the auditorium is represented by the algebraic expression y=(4x +72) /5

Step-by-step explanation:

Hi, to answer this question we have to analyze the information given:

  • <em>Number of boys added: 18 </em>
  • <em>Ratio of boys to girls: 5:4 </em>

So, the total number of boys is:

x + 18

Number of girls = y

Number of boys / number of girls = 5/4

(x+18) /y = 5/4

Solving for "y"

4 (x +18) =5 y

4x +72 = 5y

(4x +72) /5 = y

The number of girls in the auditorium is represented by the algebraic expression y=(4x +72) /5

At noon, ship A is 170 km west of ship B. Ship A is sailing east at 35 km/h and ship B is sailing north at 20 km/h. How fast is
garik1379 [7]
Check the picture below.

now, keep in mind that ship B is going at 20kph, thus from noon to 4pm, is 4 hours, so it has travelled by then 20 * 4 or 80 kilometers, thus b = 80.

whilst the ship B is moving north, the distance "a" is not really changing, and thus is a constant, that matters because the derivative of a constant is 0.

\bf c^2=a^2+b^2\implies \stackrel{chain~rule}{2c\cfrac{dc}{dt}}=0+2b\cfrac{db}{dt}\implies \cfrac{dc}{dt}=\cfrac{b\frac{db}{dt}}{c}&#10;\\\\\\&#10;\begin{cases}&#10;\frac{db}{dt}=20\\&#10;c=10\sqrt{353}\\&#10;b=80&#10;\end{cases}\implies \cfrac{dc}{dt}=\cfrac{80\cdot 20}{10\sqrt{353}}\implies \cfrac{dc}{dt}=\cfrac{160}{\sqrt{353}}&#10;\\\\\\&#10;\textit{and rationalizing the denominator}\implies \cfrac{160\sqrt{353}}{353}
