Varied group including union veterans who served in the south, reformers eager to help former slaves and others looking for business opportunity. Named because they carried all their belongings in cheap suitcases called carpetbags.
Scalawags- Offensive term applied to southern whites who joined the republican party during reconstruction. Applied also to farmers who had not supported the confederacy and who believed that an alliance with republicans was the best way to attract northern capital.
