When Griet was only sixteen years old she had to leave her family home in Delft, 1664. Her father was blinded in an accident, this caused her to have to leave early and find employment. Luck was on her side as she had found a job as a maid for a painter by the name, Johannes Vermeer. Griet lived in her employments' household for quite sometime, and was only allowed to visit her family on Sundays. On the other hand Vermeer used his employment as an artist to paint Griet. He had made Griet pierce her ears and wear his wife's pearls to paint her on a portrait. But when Vermeer's wife found out about this, she was very upset and quite angry.
