A fisherman traveled in a boat from point N upstream. After having traveled 6 km, he stopped rowing and 2 hour 40 min after firs

t leaving N, he was brought back to N by the current. Knowing that the speed of the boat in still water is 9 km/hour, find the speed of the river’s current.

upstream means going in opposite direction of river's current

downstream means going in same direction of river's current

Let the speed of river's current be x km/hour

so net speed of boat in upstream = (9-x) km/hour

net speed of boat in downstream = (9+x) km/hour

total time taken = 2 hours 40 minutes = 8/3 hours

total time taken = time in upstream + time in downstream

( time = distance / speed)

8/3 = 6/(9-x) + 6/(9+x)

solving for x

x = 6.36 km/hour

so speed of river's current = 6.36 km/hour

What is the solution to the given system of equations. y = 4x - 3<br> y = -X- 13
san4es73 [151]
Y = 4x - 3
y = -x - 13
Since both equations equal y, we will just substitute both equations to equal each other.
4x - 3 = -x - 13
+x on both sides
5x - 3 = -13
+3 on both sides
5x = -10
/5 on both sides
x = -2

Substitute x = -2 into one of the equations.
y = -x - 13
y = -(-2) - 13
y = 2 - 13
y = -11

To check answer, plug in both x and y values into one of the equations.
y = -x -13
-11 = -(-2) - 13
-11 = 2 - 13
-11 = -11

Answer:
x = -2
y = -11

HELP PLEASE Simplify the rational expression. State any excluded values. x^2-12x+35/x^2-3x-10
Alborosie

\frac{{x}^{2}  - 12x + 35 }{ {x}^{2} - 3x - 10 }
Factorise both the term by splitting the mid term and you'll get

\frac{ {x}^{2}  - 5x - 7x + 35}{ {x}^{2} - 5x + 2x - 10 }  \\  =  \frac{x(x - 5) - 7(x - 5)}{x(x - 5) + 2(x - 5)}  \\  =  \frac{(x - 7)(x - 5)}{(x + 2)(x - 5)}  \\  =  \frac{x - 7}{x + 2}
