An abolitionist is someone who wanted to abolish or get rid of slavery. This slavery was for the African Americans in the South. The United States made slavery unconstitutional in 1865 with the ending of the Civil War. The movement was helped by Abraham Lincoln, a Republican Abolitionist, and president.
