Biology

The microscope which was used to visualize the cells for the first time was the compound microscope.

Further Explanation:

The cell theory explains that the cells together make up a living organism. The cells are formed from already existing cells and are the basic structural unit of life. Over time, the introduction of microscopes and their continuous improvements helped in the discovery of cells due to the advanced magnification technologies. Earlier, glass was used to see an enlarged image of an object. Later, different eyeglasses were used to see images but with limited magnification. It was around 1620 when the first compound microscope was introduced, which makes use of an objective lens along with the eyepiece lens to visualize a real image with higher magnification.

A compound microscope has a compound lens system that helps in high magnification. It has two lenses: the objective lens and an eyepiece lens. Both lenses work together to make an enlarged image. While the lenses work to create a magnifying image, a condenser, on the other hand, focuses, is present under the stage and functions to focus the light onto the sample.

The compound microscope is also known as biological microscopes as they are used to visualize living cells and other biological samples. Some of the compound microscopes are:

 1. Phase-contrast microscope: It is used to see blood cells or bacteria using a phase-contrast objective lens and a phase condenser.
 2. Fluorescence microscopes: These microscopes use the light of different wavelengths to produce fluorescence for the study of the sample.
 3. Metallurgical microscope: It uses the reflected light and transmitted light, which passes through an objective lens to study the specimen.

Compound microscope

Further explanation

In 1665, Robert Hooke used a compound microscope to observe cells. Hooke observes the cell walls of dead plants (in the form of cork) when they appear under a microscope. He named it the cell because it looked similar to a cellula or small room inhabited by monks.

Development of microscopy:

 • 1590: Hans and Zacharias Janssen, as Dutch lens grinders, mounted two lenses in a tube to produce the first compound microscope.
 • 1660: Robert Hooke published Micrographia, containing detailed observations of biological materials made with the best compound microscope.
 • 1676: Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first person to observe a live cell under a microscope, i.e., the algae Spirogyra.
 • 1931: Ernst Ruska constructed the first electron microscope. With the invention of the electron microscope, many infectious agents smaller than bacteria could be seen.

Until now, we can see how important the use of microscopes, especially in microbiology, that is the study of microorganisms.

A certain segment of DNA can be used as a molecular clock. Its rate of mutation is one mutation per 15 million years. Examine th
Svetradugi [14.3K]

Answer and explanation;

 • This can be done by DNA sequencing which is the process of determining the accurate order of nucleotides within a DNA molecule.
 • By doing a DNA sequencing for the two sequences of DNA from the two species it will help compare the number of random mutations which have occurred in a molecular clock in the two species - that is, seeing how different the sequences are.
 • This will make it possible to infer how long ago the species diverged.

Species A: GTTGAGCTAGTATGGACC

Species B: GATAAGCTAGTAAGGTCA

These species differ in 5 nucleotides.

This number should be multiplied by the rate of mutations; that is;

5 × 15 million years =75 million years.

Write a good paragraph about what you already know about Earth’s air, water, solid Earth, and life on Earth. Please use complete
FrozenT [24]

Answer:

The air present on earth is a mixture of gases which is mostly nitrogen and then oxygen.

Water is present in many forms on the earth, as solids in ice and glaciers, as liquid water in oceans, seas, river and streams, and as water vapor in the air.

Solid earth is made of three layers; the crust, mantle and core.

Life on earth is dependent on the various features of the earth such as the water, the atmosphere, the rotation of the earth on its axis as well as its sun which provides the energy needed to power activities here on earth.

Explanation:

The air present on earth is a mixture of gases which is mostly nitrogen and then oxygen. Other gases present include carbon dioxide, water vapor, and noble gases. Oxygen is the gas needed to sustain life on earth.

Water is present in many forms on the earth, as solids in ice and glaciers, as liquid water in oceans, seas, river and streams, and as water vapor in the air.

Solid earth is made of three layers; the crust, mantle and core. The surface of the earth is where most life and human activities exist. Many features are found on the surface of the earth such as mountains, plains, valleys, etc.

Life on earth is dependent on the various features of the earth such as the water, the atmosphere, the rotation of the earth on its axis as well as its sun which provides the energy needed to power activities here on earth.

Life on earth is very diverse. The parts of the earth which contains living things is known as the biosphere. Life on earth exist from microscopic forms such as bacteria and viruses to macroscopic forms such as animal and plant life.

Wanda and marita are drinking bottles of water. each girl sounds a different musical note by blowing across the top of her bottl
frozen [14]

If there is less water in the bottle, then the note played is lower because there is more air to move around.

Using two different media (air and water) in glass bottles show how the speed of vibrations affects pitch.

Pitch is the way that your ear and brain order sounds based on their frequency (vibrations per second).

Rapid vibrations (high frequency) that reach your ear are categorized as a "higher" pitch, while slower vibrations (low frequency) are categorized as a "lower" pitch.

When you tap a glass of water with a pencil or spoon the water molecules vibrate and create sound waves through the water. More water means slower vibrations and a deeper tone.

The bottle with the most water will have the lowest pitch while the bottle with the least water will have the highest.

When Wanda and Marita blow across the top of the bottle, they set the air molecules vibrating and produce sound waves. In this case, more water results in a higher pitch, as opposed to tinkling the bottle. When the bottle has a small amount of water in it, the air molecules have lots of room and vibrate slower. Adding more water gives them less space to vibrate in, making them vibrate faster and producing a higher pitch.
