What is an epiphysis line on bone and how are they used to help determine the age of a skeleton?

Biology

pentagon [3]4 years ago

Answer:

In adult bone, this is a line found between the epiphysis and the diaphysis, that shows the left over or landmark of epiphyseal plate. The latter indicate the growth area for the lengthening or prolongation of long bone. The epiphyseal plate contains cartilage for bone production, while   the epiphysis line is formed after the production of bone by the epiphyseal plate. The marks the differences between the two.

Basically, the plate is only present in children and adolescent. And  replaced in adult  by epiphyseal line-epiphyseal closure. The latter occurs at different  age range in both sexes, 12-18 years in girls, and 14-19 in boys.

Hence with this fusion of plate it is possible to predict the age of a particular skeleton. If the growth plate fusion has taken place definitely, adult bone is the sample bone, without the line shows the the sample must belong to children or adolescent.
