Read this excerpt from We’ve Got a Job. No one would have blamed Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks if they had decided to keep quiet about

civil rights following the bombing of their friend's home. But Audrey's parents weren't intimidated. The very next day, her father and about fifteen other blacks sat down in the front section of a bus, where only whites were permitted. When the driver demanded they move to the back, Audrey's father politely refused, saying "We [are] comfortable where we are sitting." As a result, Mr. Hendricks was arrested and spent six nights in jail. When he was released, he volunteered to guard the Shuttlesworths’ home.
Why do Mr. Hendricks and others sit in a section of the bus where they are not permitted?

A) to figure out who is responsible for the previous night’s violence

B) to show they will keep fighting even though their friend’s home was destroyed

C) to rally other people in the area to join their fight against segregation laws

D) to experience the comfort and convenience of the front of the bus

Answer:

B) to show they will keep fighting even though their friend’s home was destroyed.

Explanation:

This is the main reason why Mr. Hendricks and others sit in a section of the bus where they are not permitted. During this time period, buses were segregated, and black people were only allowed to sit in the back section. However, in this story, we see how Mr. Hendricks and the other men disagree with the policy and decide to sit in the front section. This shows how the men will keep fighting for rights, regardless of what happened to their friend.

what best describes the literary device employed in this from excerpt from Ha Jin "the bane of the internet".
ValentinkaMS [17]

I would say, Simile because this compares the feeling of seeing the machine to being stabbed by a dozen awls. Similes use like or as to compare two different objects, so that is what leads me to believe this. It cannot be a symbol, because that does not represent anything. It cannot be personification because it does not take a nonliving object and give it human features. I would say that's it a metaphor, but it uses as, so I firmly believe that it is a simile..
