“The Old Swimmin’ Hole” by James Whitcomb Riley OH! the old swimmin’–hole! whare the crick so still and deep Looked like a baby-

river that was laying half asleep, And the gurgle of the worter round the drift jest below Sounded like the laugh of something we onc't ust to know Before we could remember anything but the eyes Of the angels lookin' out as we left Paradise; But the merry days of youth is beyond our controle, And it's hard to part ferever with the old swimmin'–hole. Oh! the old swimmin'–hole! In the happy days of yore, When I ust to lean above it on the old sickamore, Oh! it showed me a face in its warm sunny tide That gazed back at me so gay and glorified, It made me love myself, as I leaped to caress My shadder smilin' up at me with sich tenderness. But them days is past and gone, and old Time's tuck his toll From the old man come back to the old swimmin'–hole. Oh! the old swimmin'–hole! In the long, lazy-days When the humdrum of school made so many run-a-ways, How plesant was the jurney down the old dusty lane, Whare the tracks of our bare feet was all printed so plane You could tell by the dent of the heel and the sole They was lots o'fun on hands at the old swimmin'–hole. But the lost joys is past! Let your tears in sorrow roll Like the rain that ust to dapple up the old swimmin'–hole. There the bullrushes growed, and the cattails so tall, And the sunshine and shadder fell over it all; And it mottled the worter with amber and gold Tel the glad lilies rocked in the ripples that rolled; And the snake-feeder's four gauzy wings fluttered by Like the ghost of a daisy dropped out of the sky, Or a wounded apple-blossom in the breeze's controle As it cut acrost some orchurd to'rds the old swimmin'–hole. Oh! the old swimmin'—hole! When I last saw the place, The scene was all changed, like the change in my face; The bridge of the railroad now crosses the spot Whare the old divin'–log lays sunk and fergot. And I stray down the banks whare the trees ust to be – But never again will theyr shade shelter me! And I wish in my sorrow I could strip to the soul, And dive off in my grave like the old swimmin'–hole. Read these lines from the poem again: But the merry days of youth is beyond our controle, And it's hard to part ferever with the old swimmin'–hole.
Which idea do these lines from the poem illustrate?

As people grow older, they want to forget about their happy childhood experiences.

People cannot remember the things that once made them happy as they grow older.

Even though people grow older, they do not forget their happy memories.

It is difficult for people to explain why things made them happy as children.

No it is not because children can be happy by just getting a new pair of shoes or even something to play with

notka56 [123]
The central idea of this passage is D. The Egyptian pyramids are familiar even to people who have never visited them.

The author clearly starts by saying that, although he has never seen the pyramids before, he knew exactly what they’re supposed to look like. Many times before he has seen them in pictures, so it is understandable that the idea of what the pyramids look like is already in his head. Although he then continues to talk about the size of the pyramids, there is still a tone of familiarity.

Topic 1: Everyone should get an education, because it can get them higher paying jobs, make them more interesting as people, and, most of all, a more well informed citizen.

Topic 2: Bowling is a fantastic sport that everyone should play, because it has no age restrictions, it can be played at any time of the day, and it's cost effective.

Topic 3: Children require lots of care, as they have physical, and emotional needs to be met, and they also need help growing mentally.

Topic 4: Driving a car is a very big responsibility, as you must be careful not to harm yourself or others, abide by the rules of the road, and safely make it to your destination.

Topic 5: I think the school funding a new computer lab would be very beneficial, because the students can use it to do research for a paper, study for a test, or just do research for fun to learn new things that interest them.

Topic 6: I believe celebrities can act as good role models, as they may have a positive influence on their followers by sharing good messages with them, they may connect with their followers on a personal level, and they can even inspire their followers to be successful in life.
