I believe that an unhappy ending can do that. 
When a story has a happy ending, then you finish it and you feel satisfied and joyful about how the story ended. On the other hand, if the story ends in an unhappy manner, you start thinking about the resolutions and imagining what could lead to such an ending and how it could be fixed.

The tone you’d most likely use is an engaging/exciting, educational tone if that makes sense. You’d want to use an exciting tone that also has a dramatic tone to it. I’m pretty sure you underline the word “on” in the sentence including “on his return home." Sorry if I’m not correct, I’ve never done this exact question.
