So purpose of the fire was to send a signal to anyone on a boat or ship to come rescue the boys. However, later on in the story, someone sets the jungle on fire to kill Ralph. So, the fire was originally intended for good but then was used to do evil.

As for the drum roll, I think it represents chaos and future troubles they will encounter because they have "fallen apart as a society." There is a lot of discord among the boys.

Hopefully this helped and good luck.

Semmy [17]
My inference is that Negi's father wants to spend more time with his daughter. So at this point he is actually being selfish.

Which three lines in this excerpt from William Cullen Bryant's "Thanatopsis" best indicate the theme of the poem?
Gekata [30.6K]

William Cullen Bryant wants to show with this lovely poem ”Thanatopsis “ which means view on the death in Greek, that death is nothing to be feared. It is the natural thing that we all can die today or tomorrow and we could live with the assurance that we will meet the ones who went before us.

The three lines which best indicate this theme are:

Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,

Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed

By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave,
