The answer is C: (Rumors) Whispers of doubt filled the empty halls like the reek of rotten eggs.

A mental picture is a representation of the world outside the mind, inside someone´s mind. That is to say, it is an image of the physical world as it is experienced by a subject in reality. Although abstract concepts are, by definition, devoid of specific representations, they can easily be translated into mental pictures that convey their sense and meaning. In the answer above, rumors are linked, through metaphor, to whispers and the smell of rotten eggs, which is a powerful image to represent rumors.

What theme of Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game” comes through in this excerpt?
Tems11 [23]

The Most Dangerous Game story as two major themes. The first one is reason vs. Instinct and The Effects of War.

On this excerpt, you can see that the theme is reason vs. instinct. The hunter thinks that hunting is a good sport even though it kills an animal that has no way of defending itself. The character Whitney defends that the jaguar has feelings, especially the fear of pain and being killed.

This way this character is used to blur differences between animals and humans, that both have the same feelings.
