This trait is only passed down because of heredity. Think of it like this: In a Punnet Square, we can show H for trait of more than five fingers or toes, while h for trait of normal five fingers or toes. If two parents with the H trait is dominant, the offspring has a high likely chance to develop the same trait. Thus, most in this village have the polydactyl trait, the likelihood of the trait being passed on is high.
