Answer:

Amylase catalyzes the reaction; glucose is the product

Explanation:

In the process of digestion, polysaccharides like starch are broken down into monosaccharides before being absorbed. Digestion of starch is catalysed by amylase enzymes which are salivary amylase and pancreatic amylase. Salivary amylase begins digestion of starch inside mouth during chewing process. The digestion is further carried out by pancreatic amylase in small intestine. The starch is hydrolysed in digestion process and the products are glucose, maltose, maltotriose and α-dextrins. Disaccharides like maltose are further converted into monosaccharides by enzymes like maltase which are present in brush border of small intestinal cells.

What is the difference between emphysema and asthma?
Ierofanga [76]

Answer:

<em>Asthma and COPD are both chronic lung diseases. COPD is mainly due to damage caused by smoking, while asthma is due to an inflammatory reaction. COPD is a progressive disease, while allergic reactions of asthma can be reversible.</em><em>With asthma, the swelling is often triggered by something you're allergic to, like pollen or mold, or by physical activity. COPD is the name given to a group of lung diseases that include emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema happens when the tiny sacs in your lungs (called alveoli) are damaged</em><em>.</em>

A group of scientists are studying the effects of different fertilizers on the growth of pea plants. They began their study with
katrin [286]
A control group of the experiment is the one in which no treatment or intervention is given. So, in your case, the pea plants in which was not subjected any of the fertilizers, will serve as a control group. This is a negative control. A positive control group is the one in which an established treatment is given, which definitely leads to the production of the desired character. So, in your case, a very good well-known fertilizer which has a positive control on the growth of the pea plant, would serve as a positive control.

Which characteristic differentiates amphibians from reptiles?
Stells [14]

Option D – amphibians may use their skin for gas exchange is the characteristic feature of amphibians that differs from reptiles.

Explanation:

The amphibian skin is moist, thin and marbled and supplied by blood vessels running on its surface. The moisture present in the skin dissolves the oxygen present in its surrounding which is absorbed by the blood vessels. Special glands help the amphibians to keep the skin moist.

The very thick and tough scales present on the reptiles prevent them to absorb oxygen through their skin. Hence, they breathe and respire through their lungs.

Amphibians have three-chambered heart. They do not develop amniotic eggs. Adult amphibians although spend much time on land, they breed only in water due to the absence of amniotic sac .

In Marker Analysis, how are STRs related to alleles? Be sure to define each term (STR and allele) and explain how the two result
Lisa [10]

Answer:

The number of STR repeats is unique and therefore it is considered as an allele of that <em>locus</em>

Explanation:

Short Tandem Repeats (STRs), also known as microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSRs), are short DNA sequences with a size of 1-6 nucleotide bases which may be many times repeated in tandem. STRs localize in specific regions of the genome (<em>loci</em>) and therefore they are molecular markers. Gel electrophoresis a technique used to separate DNA fragments based on their size. In consequence, the pattern of STR repeats or 'alleles' obtained by electrophoresis can be used to identify individuals. In a gel electrophoresis, STR markers produce different bands that run more slowly or faster on the gel in different lanes according to their size (e.g., more slowly >> higher size of the STR sequence), and thereby STR alleles are unique and serve to identify individuals.
