In order to elect the president, the Constitution created the Electoral College. Instead of being elected via direct vote, the president receives his or her votes from a series of delegates. Each state has a set number of delegates depending on its population. When voters in the states go to cast their ballots for the president, they are actually voting for the delegates who will (in theory) then cast their votes for the president.
