In order to subtract 2.34 from 20, the best method is using column subtraction.
To do this, we put the main number on top, and the number we are taking away underneath it.
When we set it out, we need to make sure that all the columns line up properly, the units in one line, tens in the other etc.
If taking decimals from a whole number, I would always recommend putting '0's after the decimal point for place value.
For the layout, see below:
   20.00
-    2.34

Now, as we cannot subtract 4 from 0, we must begin borrowing from the neighbours.
As 2 is the nearest number, we take one from there and move it next door
1¹0.00
Do the same again, 10 becomes 9
19.¹00
And one last time
19.9¹0

Now subtract 2.34 from 19.9¹0

   19.9¹0
-    2.34

10 - 4 = 6
9 - 3 = 6
9 - 2 = 7
1 - 0 = 1

17.66

Hope it makes sense, once you get your head round it you'll be fine

2x+5-3x=8(x+1); solve for x.
aev [14]

We are given:

2x + 5 - 3x = 8(x + 1)

We can start with several things. First, we can combine the x terms on the left side of the equation, and apply the distributive property on the right side of the equation.

5 - x = 8x + 8

Now, we can add x to both sides, and subtract 8 from both sides to isolate the variable.

5 - x = 8x + 8

-8 + x  + x -8

We end up with:

9x = -3

By dividing both sides by 9, we get x = -\frac{1}{3}.

If you want to check your answer, just plug x in!

2(-\frac{1}{3}) + 5 - 3(-\frac{1}{3}) = 8(-\frac{1}{3} + 1)

-\frac{2}{3} + 5 + 1 = -\frac{8}{3} + 8

-\frac{2}{3} + \frac{18}{3} = -\frac{8}{3} + \frac{24}{3}

\frac{16}{3} = \frac{16}{3}

As you can see, \frac{16}{3} = \frac{16}{3} as a result of having x = -\frac{1}{3}.

A herd of horses split and went to three areas. One fourth of the herd of horses was seen in the forest. Twice the square root o
melamori03 [73]

Answer:the total number of horses in the herd is 36

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x represent the total number of horses in the herd.

One fourth of the herd of horses was seen in the forest. This means that the number of horses that was seen in the forest would be

1/4 × x = x/4

Twice the square root of the herd had gone to the mountain slopes. This means that the number of horses that had gone to the mountain slopes would be

2 × √x = 2√x

Three times five horses remained on the riverbank. This means that the number that remained would be

3 × 5 = 15

Therefore

x/4 + 2√x + 15 = x

x - x/4 - 15 = 2√x

(4x - x - 60)/4 = 2√x

(3x - 60)/4 = 2√x

Cross multiplying,

3x - 60 = 8√x

Squaring both sides of the equation, it becomes

(3x - 60)(3x - 60) = 64x

9x² - 180x - 180x + 3600 = 64x

9x² - 360x - 64x + 3600 = 0

9x² - 424x + 3600 = 0

Applying the quadratic equation

x = (- b ±√b² - 4ac)/2a

x = ( - - 424 ± √-424² - 4(9 × 3600)/2 × 9

x = (424 ± √179776 - 129600)/18

x = (424 ±√50176)/18

x = (424 + 224)/18 or

x = (424 - 224)/18

x = 36 or x = 11.11

the number of horses must be whole number. Therefore, the number of horses is 36

The following equation has denominators that contain variables. For this equation write the value or values of the variable that
jarptica [38.1K]

Answer:

X = 3/5

Step-by-step explanation:

2/x=4/5x+2

Find the LCM of the denominator 5x and 1

2/x =4/5x + 2/1

2/x = (4 + 10x)/5x

Cross multiply the equation

2× 5x = (4+ 10x) × x

10x = 4x + 10x^2

Collect like term of the mixed number

10x - 4x = 10x^2

6x = 10x^2

Divide both side by 2x

6x/2x = {10x^2 } / 2x

3 = 5x

Divide both side by the coefficient of x

3/5 = 5x/5

X = 3/5
