The concept of judicial review is critical to understanding the power of the US Supreme Court. Without the Marbury vs. Madison case, the Supreme Court may have not had this power.

Judicial review is the idea that the Supreme Court has the ability to interpret the constitution and what they laws really mean. This power has been used in monumental court cases throughout history including Brown vs. Board of Education and Harper vs. Virginia Board of Election.

This power given to the Supreme Court also resulted in this part of the federal government to become a co-equal branch of government along with the legislative and executive branches.
