No, most weren't successful. The Sacramento Bee newspaper reported that "one in every five miners who came to California in 1849 was dead within six months."  Those who lived to tell the tail found the work very hard.  Most of those who became wealthy off gold were (1) lucky and (2) found their gold during the early days of the Gold Rush.

Actually, alot of those who got rich off the gold rush were the ones who ran businesses to support the prospectors' needs for clothing, equipment, etc.

During the late 1800's and early 1900's millions of people immigrated to the United States. Identify and explain several reasons
Ulleksa [173]
In the late 1800s, people in many parts of the world decided to leave their homes and immigrate to the United States. Fleeing crop failure, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famine, many came to the U. S. because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity. Others came seeking personal freedom or relief from political and religious persecution, and nearly 12 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1870 and 1900. During the 1870s and 1880s, the vast majority of these people were from Germany, Ireland, and England - the principal sources of immigration before the Civil War. Even so, a relatively large group of Chinese immigrated to the United States between the start of the California gold rush in 1849 and 1882, when federal law stopped their immigration.

How do you think Attorney General Palmer might have responded in 1919 if someone had pointed out that the first amendment and th
ivolga24 [154]
Attorney General Palmer probably would have responded by discussing how these sedition acts are needed for national security. The sedition acts essentially punished individuals for speaking negatively against government actions during a time of war. Palmer probably felt this was necessary, as any efforts to ruin the war effort could result in the US military not succeeding.

Along with this, Palmer might have also discussed how the government was trying to protect American citizens in the best way that they could.
