The presidential election of the year 1856 in the United States was the Eighteenth quadrennial election for the post of President. It was a three-way election. In this election, James Buchanan of the Democratic party defeated the nominees of the Republican and the American Party, John C. Frémont and Millard Fillmore respectively. It was during this time that the party member of John C. Frémont used the slogan “Free soil, free speech, and Frémont.”
