First of all, this quote is very important for two reasons. The origin and the outcome. Now, the origin: the germans made the refugees or captives understand that they had two work for them if they didn't want to die. That message was clear upon arrival for everyone. A clear sign of a chance for survival if they wanted it. Meaning that they didn't look to kill all of the refugees. Second, the outcome: it was up to the refugees to give up their dignity to survive or keep their pride and die.
