X/5 - 3 < 5....add 3 to both sides
x/5 < 5 + 3
x/5 < 8....multiply both sides by 5, eliminating the 5 on the left side
x < 8 * 5
x < 40 ...... ur solution

* and just so u know, x/5 is the same as (1/5)x....in case u wanted to solve it a little different........1/5x < 8...u would divide both sides by 1/5.....x < 8 / (1/5).....x < 8 * 5/1......x < 40....u will still get the same answer

Single variable inequalities are quite similar to single variable equalities, but they do have a few different rules.

In this case, there is no need for those "different rules", so we can just imagine that the "<" is just an equal sign.

\frac{x}{5} -3\ \textless \ 5

Add both sides by 3

\frac{x}{5} \ \textless \ 8

Multiply both sides by 5

x\ \textless \ 40

That's your answer. Have an awesome day! :)

Why is (3,4),(5,10),(3,12) not a function
jasenka [17]
A function has a property such as "one input must be mapped to exactly one output." An input is the x-value, and the output is, generally, the y-value. In this set of points above, the input 3 maps to 4 <em>and </em>12, and therefore is not a function.
