I believe the answer is: compared to the U.S. students, the Chinese students used a more holistic perceptual style and tended to see and remember object and background as a single perceptual image.

According to them, This finding might explain why on average the score of students with Asian Ethnicity tend to better compared to other students in united states. People with more holistic perceptual style tend to utilise both their right and left brain to learn, which would make it easier for them to put something in their memory.
