The ENTIRE Civil War was about money, taxation and growing the power of a federal government over individual state rights. The end of slavery was not intended at the time the war started as most of the worlds countries at the time used slavery and serfdom to build their economies.

The only compromise that could have headed off war by then was for the Southern states to forgo secession and agree to abolition. ... But without it, there would likely have been no Union to defend in the Civil War.
