The cotyledons with is the seed store food which is used by the plant during germination. Within the seed lies a small plant called as embryo which germinates when the temperature, moisture, air and light conditions are adequate. The first stage of growth involves formation of primary root called radicle. In the second stage, the shoot emerges from the seed which has three main parts- a) the cotyledons, hypocotyl and epicotyl. The cotyledons are also called as seed leaves.  

Once the stem starts growing leaves come on it and hence it starts food production for itself through process of photosynthesis
