During a 24-hour British siege on a  September night during the War of 1812, the flag flew over Fort McHenry, located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Francis  Scott Key, who was a witness to the battle got inspired  to write a poem, “The Defense of Fort McHenry”. This poem evolved into the American national anthem.
