A rug is to be centered in a room so that the border around it is of a consistent width on all four sides. If the room is 10 ft

by 15 ft, and the area of the rug is 24 square feet, how wide will the border be?

Answer:

The width of the border can be 9 feet or 3.5 feet.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the width be x

Length of room = 10 feet

Breadth of room = 15 feet

Length of rug = 10-2x

Breadth of rug = 15-2x

Area of rug = (10-2x)(15-2x)

We are given that the area of the rug is 24 square feet.

So,  (10-2x)(15-2x)=24 ---A

150-20x-30x+4x^2=24

150-24-50x+4x^2=0

126-50x+4x^2=0

2(x-9)(2x-7)=0

x=9,\frac{7}{2}

x=9,3.5

Substitute x =9 in A

(10-2(9))(15-2(9))=24

24=24

LHS = RHS

Substitute x = 3.5

(10-2(3.5))(15-2(3.5))=24

24=24

LHS = RHS

So, The width of the border can be 9 feet or 3.5 feet.

wolverine [178]

Answer:

(1) The probability that the shop owner sells over 2000 cups of coffee in a week is 0.2514.

(2) The shop owner has no reasonable chance to expect earning a profit more than $300.

(3) The probability that the shop owner will sell a doughnut to more than half of his coffee customers is 0.2611.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let <em>X</em> = number of cups of coffee sold and <em>Y</em> = number of donuts sold.

The random variable <em>X</em> follows a Normal distribution with parameters <em>μ</em> = 320 and <em>σ </em>= 20.

The random variable <em>Y</em> follows a Normal distribution with parameters <em>μ</em> = 150 and <em>σ </em>= 12.

The shop owner opens the shop 6 days a week.

(1)

Compute the probability that the shop owner sells over 2000 cups of coffee in a week as follows:

P(X>2000)=P(\frac{X-\mu}{\sigma}>\frac{2000-(6\times320)}{6\times20})\\=P(Z>0.67)\\=1-P(Z

Thus, the probability that the shop owner sells over 2000 cups of coffee in a week is 0.2514.

(2)

The equation representing the profit earned on selling 1 cup of coffee and 1 doughnut in a day is:

P = 0.5<em>X</em> + 0.4<em>Y</em>

Compute the probability that the shop owner earns more than $300 as profit as follows:

P(Profit>300)=P(\frac{Profit-\mu}{\sigma}>\frac{300-((0.5\times320)+(0.4\times150))}{\sqrt{0.5^{2}(20)^{2}+0.4^{2}(12)^{2}}})\\=P(Z>7.21)\\\approx0

The probability of earning a profit more then $300 is approximately 0.

Thus, the shop owner has no reasonable chance to expect earning a profit more than $300.

(3)

The expression representing the statement "he'll sell a doughnut to more than half of his coffee customers" is:

<em>Y</em> > 0.5<em>X</em>

<em>Y</em> - 0.5<em>X</em> > 0

Compute the probability of the event (<em>Y</em> - 0.5<em>X</em> > 0) as follows:

P(Y - 0.5X > 0)=P(\frac{(Y - 0.5X) -\mu}{\sigma}>\frac{0-(150-(0.5\times320}{\sqrt{12^{2}+0.5^{2}20^{2}}})\\=P(Z>0.64)\\=1-P(Z

Thus, the probability that the shop owner will sell a doughnut to more than half of his coffee customers is 0.2611.

Is the equation y=85x-600 linear? Explain why or why not.
Pani-rosa [81]
Yes the equation is linear because the linear equation is y=mx+b and y=85x-600 is linear.

Each small square on this scale weighs 1 unit. Each larger square weighs 10 units. The weight of the triangle x is unknown. The
Iteru [2.4K]

The equation to represent the relationship of the weights shown on the scale s 22 + x = 34

The weights are given as:

Small\ Square = 1

Larger\ Square = 10

The total weight on one side, where there are 4 small squares and 3 large squares is:

Total =4\times Small\ Square + 3 \times  Larger\ Square

Total =4\times 1 + 3 \times  10

Total =34

The total weight on the other side, where there are 2 small squares, 2 large squares and 1 triangle is:

Total =2\times Small\ Square + 2 \times  Larger\ Square + 1\times triangle

Total =2\times 1+ 2 \times  10+ 1\times triangle

Total =2+ 20+ 1\times triangle

Total =22+ 1\times triangle

Total =22+ triangle

The weight of the triangle is x.

So, we have:

Total =22+ x

The weights on both sides are equal, because the scale is balanced.

So, we have:

22 + x = 34

Hence, the equation is 22 + x = 34

Answer:

The answer is 15.

Step-by-step explanation: To find the answer you have to think of a number line and think how many spaces do I have to jump to get to seven from negative eight.So you have to add eight just to get to 0. Now add 7 to get to 7. Together it equals 15.
