The setting of a story refers to the time and place in which the story is set. In the case of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the setting is typical of a gothic novel.

Gothic stories take place in dark settings. These can be rural or urban. However, when the story takes place in an urban setting, the author usually emphasizes the gloomy, dirty and hidden areas of a city. Moreover, these stories are usually set at night or in dark places, which increases the feeling of uncertainty in the reader. The novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde displays many of these characteristics.
