Dorothea Dix was a young woman who was concerned on how the mentally ill were being treated. She thought that those who needed help in the mental area should not belong in the prisons. She thought that they should have their own place to get better. Also, she did not agree with the treatment of prisoners. Back then prisoners were treated unfairly and could often be tortured. She made sure that this would not longer happen.

Okay, the other answer is wrong. The Electoral College's votes are what decide if you can be president or not. So people who actually became president (like Lincoln) did recieve enough votes from the Electoral College. However, during his own election, Al Gore didn't get enough votes from the Electoral College in the Presidential Election in 2000. That's why he lost the election, even though his popular vote was higher.
