“They tied me up, then, plumb / amidships, back to the mast, lashed to the mast, / and took themselves again to rowing.” This is the quote that supports the respects of the crew for Odysseus.

EXPLANATION

The Odyssey is a poem created by Homer, a renowned Greek author near the end of 8th Century BC. One of the major ancient Greek epic poems besides the Iliad, the Oddysey provided the fundamentals to modern western canon. The poem focused on the journey of Odysseus, the Greek hero and the king of Ithaca on his journey home after the fall of Troy.

Since then, the Odyssey was read by so many people. At first, it was read in Homeric Greek. Later on, it was translated into a modern language all around the world. Many people had believed that the original Odyssey poem was written in an oral tradition. It was written by an epic poet or singer, at that time, it was called aoidos.

It has been a debatable topic for so many people about the details of oral performance. The transformation from the oral performance into the written one has also caused a lot of debate among scholars.

The Odyssey was first written in Greek, specifically the poetic dialect one. The plot in the poem is non-linear. The poem is focusing on the events about women and slaves. In other languages, including English, the word odyssey refers to an epic voyage.

The Odyssey is one of the most influential works in western literature. It is widely recognized as a timeless classic. The story of Odyssey has been retold a lot since then. The Odyssey has also been made into a TV movie in 1997. The movie was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky.
