Lessing had a hard childhood, full of struggle. She tried to enjoy nature but was told to stop and "become a proper woman" by her mother. Perhaps just like she thought her mother was overprotective, she told the story to make Jerry's mother overprotective because she had experience with overprotective mothers.

Each time he reappears, the wolf is closer to the girl and she is closer to getting home safely, which makes the suspense grow because her chances of getting away safely seem to grow as she gets closer to the gate and decrease as the wolf gets closer to her.
