Denmark Vessey was a former slave who bought his freedom at the age of 32. From there, Vessey got involved with the Presbyterian Church. In 1818, he went on to be one of the founders of a new church called the African Methodist Episcopal Church. This church became very popular in the state of Pennsylvania, drawing over one thousand  African-Americans members.
