A novel is story that has a few characters from two or more, a setting, characterization, theme and a plot.
Poetry is a written picture describing an emotion or feeling that a story cannot do all the time.

A novel is written from first person point of view.
Poetry is written from second person point of view.

Novels are long fictional stories.
Poetry is shorter and can be fiction or non-fiction.

Similarities

They both are narrative writing.
They both can use literary devices.

For one thing there was a great influx of legal immigration. People came from many parts of Europe. They had to be taught English which was the language of the time.

For another, America was becoming more industrialized which meant she needed trained workers. This is true of many other countries as well.
